Social Media

The majority of our data comes from publicly available Twitter data from 2013 to 2019. This data includes either #CanadaReads or the phrase ‘Canada Reads’ and is collected using a number of customized scripts developed by the research team.

We analyze social media posts relevant to Canada Reads from 2015 to the present day. For Twitter posts we use a Python script to collect any tweet that uses the phrase “Canada Reads” or the hashtag, #CanadaReads. We then manually scan that data for spam and clean up the data to remove irregular characters or bad data. For Instagram, our process is far more manual and involves reading, scanning, and collecting Instagram posts relevant to Canada Reads.

Online Media

We trace discussions of Canada Reads and Canadian Literature more generally in online spaces to understand the tenor of the conversation.
